The Style of Leadership

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and Girl Scout CEO Anna Maria Chavez are models of confidence. The three joined together to kick off the “Ban Bossy” campaign www.banbossy.com to teach girls leaderships skills. The site provides tips and must-know facts to help girls step out of their comfort zones.

The body language the women exhibit in the photograph makes it clear they are world leaders, change agents, and role models. With their heads up and shoulders back they exhibit perfect podium posture. The wide smiles communicate enthusiasm.

The richly-colored, solid suits photograph well. The purple and blues make a statement about authority without being boring. These are clearly women on a mission.

Vibrant Voice

Vibrant Voice

Did you know that warming up your body will also warm up your voice?  Simple relaxation exercises will help ensure that the tone of your voice is easy on the ears.  A lower tone and slower pace sounds conversational.  A high pitch and fast pace can sound anxious. These exercises will help improve your vocal quality and reduce nervous anxiety.

Shoulder rolls – slowly roll your shoulders back.  Feel the chest open and expand.

Head turns – drop your chin and roll your head side-to-side.  Don’t turn the head 360 degrees because that movement can cause strain.

Face squeeze – slowly open your mouth very wide, hold it open for a couple of seconds and then slowly close.  Move the jaw from side-to-side.

These three simple steps will relax your face and neck muscles.  Tension will lessen and the audience will enjoy listening to what you have to say.
